It was made as a more accessible game for a market not already dominated by the Role Playing Game. This has nothing to do with intelligence or difficulty; rather, it has to do with patience.
That aside, Mystic Quest is an excellent game with a spectacular sound track. It is the perfect entry point for anyone looking to get into RPGs.

I will agree with that. the lack of diversity in weapons and magic bugs me but then I am used to games like BOF star ocean ect.

I hate to agree, but sure. At the time, Square Soft and Enix had not merged. Dragon Quest begin the bigger franchise at the time, but owned by Enix. Has the game come out after the merger, maybe it would have been called Dragon Quest USA or even Dragon Warrior for that matter since that is the US title.
